This place is great. Is it the most authentic Chinese in the valley? No. Is it the best Chinese in the valley? No again. Does it have great service? I couldn't tell you because I got take-out. I might be a little biased because I like food. I love to eat, and I will eat pretty much about anything. That being said I did like the prices of this place, and the atmosphere.

I was overcharged too. Hostess was very rude. Hair was found in my pho. Pho didn't taste that great. It was very bland and spice flavors were missing. Green Papaya Pho and Pho Saigon in West Valley offers a better bowl of pho.

Well, it has been a few years since my review and I feel it is time for an update. South China now ranks a solid 3 stars from me. It's not horrible, but it's not knock your socks off great. It is what it is and that is a neighborhood Chinese Restaurant that specializes in americanized Chinese dishes. If they were going for authentic they would get 1 star from me. The hot and sour soup is a solid winner here. The egg drop stinks. I like the beef with flat noodles and the still do a strong General Taos Chicken. Take away service is quick and easy and that is pretty much the only way I eat here.

Huge menu, friendly and FAST service. It's fast enough to go here for lunch during a workday if you're five minutes away. Will not disappoint!

Great Pho! Worth a shot... Somewhat disappointed at their online presence. No hours of operation. No menu. No website. No Facebook for further information. Someone help these people out.

I usually stay away from most Chinese restaurants since they are usually very Americanized. Stopped here for a meal to go as my son was hungry while we were shopping down in SLC. The price and service is really pretty good, but the food is nothing great. Ordered some sweet and sour pork lunch meal with fried rice. It was well packaged and they included everything you needed to eat it. The pork was generic fried pork that you get, and the sauce was also the average run of the meal sauce nothing special. The wanton soup was pretty good though as were the egg rolls. Fried rice was not very good, and would get just plain rice if I get the lunch meal again. Overall a 2.25 star place to eat. Some of the dishes seam good, but it is still just a generic Chinese restaurant with nothing special to it that I found eaten so far. Not a bad location and if you are hungry after shopping at the market next door it is a cheap meal.

The pho is so pho-ing good, I am a casual pho eater, I don't pho with it too often but this is the best I've had in salt lake

I love this place. One of the best kept secrets in town. I have been coming here for years. The staff is always friendly. Olivia is quite possibly the nicest lady in the world. I almost always get the V6 or V7 but the Pho is great too! I never get Chinese food here so I can't comment on that but the Vietnamese food is excellent. I wish the quality of service at every restaurant was like this.

I love the Pho here.. the broth is very flavorful and the taste is pretty consistent.. one of the best in SLC. I haven't tried anything else here since the pho is so good!

I really recommend the rare beef Pho. (Fuh..) I had #17 two days in a row it was so good. My friend had #14. Both delicious. The hot and sour soup was good too. The entrees (i.e. orange chicken) weren't as good as the soup.

Based on a return visit, I am bumping up my review by one star. The V10 pho was flavorful and fresh.

A family favorite. We love the combo plates with hot and sour soup. Very friendly staff and a laid back vibe. I tried the rare beef pho Finally and it was really good! The cashew chicken and the general tso's are great.

Pho soup is all about the broth and this place has good broth. It's cheap for a big bowl of soup. Bun noodles with lemongrass is tasty and also affordable. I have eaten Chinese food here and it's ok, but nothing amazing. Service ranges from amazing to spotty based on how busy they are, but the folks that

The Pho is perfection. My husband and I stop here regularly to get our fix. The lo mein is my favorite that I've found so far in the valley. Squishy, delicious noodles that taste awesome. The egg rolls are massive, and 2 is plenty for two people. but most importantly - the owners are kind and attentive. Is it the fanciest place around? Probably not. But I'll take quirky and kind over uppity perfection any day.

I have been going here for the pho over 10 years. The servers and staff feel like family as whenever we return we are greeted so kindly and they even remember what we like to order. V18 Pho with meatball added is AMAZING. the tendon is so delicious and buttery, full of collagen that makes your lips and skin feel full and luscious. I describe the pho as a drug there, and i am an addict. The spicy and complex broth is like getting a long hug when you take the first sip. Bowls packed with meat and noodles. When we order water, our server often brings us free coconut water or fresh lemonade without asking. If i could give them 10 stars i would. Many might be turned off by the ambience, its not upscale or pretentious. If you pass this place up based on appearance you are really missing out on some world class Pho. I have never ordered anything off the Chinese menu. They do pho so well they should consider dropping the rest of the menu and just doing vietnamese. Its all most people go for and it is my favorite in town.

I love their egg rolls although everything else is average. I've tried pho, stir fried noodles, lemon grass chicken. Nothing was memorable. The only reason I would come back is for their egg rolls. Although they charge $5 for two, which is a bit overpriced for egg rolls.

Really good, small Chinese food restaurant hidden next to an Asian market. I'm surprised this place isn't more popular. The Pho is always tasty, as the Vietnamese rolls are as well. Prompt service, enjoyable experience. I would go back again.

Came at 1pm and tried their lunch special. Ordered garlic sauce pork, broccoli beef and cashew chicken. Food is of average quality here, not bad, but neither impressive. Although cook is from china, but the flavor is highly localized. Maybe should order Vietnam pho next time.

it's really good... i don't know why there are not so much crowd there.. pho is fantastic and their appetizer of fried wonton skins are really good too... pho is clean and not so msg taste and the noodles are done to perfection

They're ok...I'm not a fan of Vietnamese food although I don't mind them. Asia Palace has better tasting pho. Actually I make better pho being a non-vietnamese asian.. Other stuff in the menu is regular chinese stuff you can find anywhere. Their vermicelli and rice dishes don't offer too much variety either. The things they put in those dishes are pretty boring and limited considering the price. I had the experience with overcharging too so I'm not too impressed by them.

BUYER BEWARE!!! Just had lunch here with my mom and they overcharged me and when I asked why they told me they add gratuity, from when? What a rip off! That's bad business and shame on the owners for being so sneaky!!! Never again!

Small and homey, this place is a fantastic value with great customer service. Most entrees, of which there are many, are $7.50 and taste great. The pho recipe of theirs is particularly good as well, in my opinion. I also love they they use bean sprouts in their fried rice--not enough Chinese restaurants do this! Their pot stickers are also outstanding and noteworthy. It's hard to beat their value.

I was brought here the first time by a very good chef who works for a world renowned restauranteur. It was my first time eating Pho so I am no expert. The fried Vietnamese spring rolls are great. A must have. The Pho is good. Maybe not the best you will have but really good I tried the Chinese once and didn't care for it. I think its good for people which have no idea what good Chinese is. I was very surprised by the less than favorable reviews. The owners are nice, the restaurant clean and the food is good. If you read this review please try it and let me know what you think.

Spicy Pho is excellent. Service has been good - a little slow if they get really busy, but most of the time it is very good. I can't comment on other menu items, other than 'Summer' rolls (which are the type that I often see listed as 'Spring' rolls) the non-fried type - which are excellent and served with the traditional peanut sauce. Always nice to have the chili and other condiments right there at the table. Owners have always treated me and my guests well. Prices are very reasonable. I give it a solid four stars.

I WANT MY $2!!! (tehe) Seriously though, I used to really like this place, but I had the worst customer service today.* [SEE UPDATE BELOW] Let me first say, for food, I'd say they are pretty good. However, today I ordered pho to go, I didn't have a menu in front of me, so I just called and ordered pho with meatballs, rare beef, and tripe. I got there, and my order totaled $10.09. I said, "whoa, have your prices gone up?" The hostess replied it's because I added tripe. Had I known, I would have just ordered the combo pho for $7.75, but whatever. I got back to my office and opened my food... Low and behold, NO TRIPE! I called them, and I said that I was the customer who was just there and added tripe to my pho for an added charge, and the hostess replied, "yes, we added $2 to your order." I said, well you guys forgot to add the tripe. She put me on hold to ask the chef if this was correct - since of course I might be lying! I had already paid, but I just like to take extra time out of my workday to call restaurants and complain, you know, as a prank. She gets back on the phone and concurs that the chef screwed up my order and says next time I come in, they'll give me $1 off of my meal! I said, you charged me $2 extra for something I didn't get! She replies with some sort of stupid back peddling about me probably getting more meat. WTF?! I have at least 4 other nearby pho places from which to choose. I hope that dollar they saved is worth a lost customer! (Make that $2 since I won't be returning for my "$1 off") * I'M ADDING AN UPDATE BECAUSE SHORTLY AFTER I POSTED THIS, I HAD A MESSAGE ON MY PHONE FROM THE RESTAURANT STATING THAT THEY WOULD REFUND $2 BACK TO MY CREDIT CARD! NOW THAT IS VERY GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE! THANK GOODNESS BECAUSE, IN THE PAST, I HAD RECEIVED SUCH NICE SERVICE HERE FROM POLITE STAFF. SOOO, THEY ARE OFFICIALLY REDEEMED IN MY BOOK, AND I WILL BE RETURNING. THANK GOODNESS BECAUSE MY NEW WORKPLACE IS REALLY CLOSE TO THEM!

On multiple occasions, I have called my parents, and they have told me that they ate here with my sisters that past weekend. This was definitely part of their regimen of restaurants that were part of their "rice only" restaurants. I finally was able to try out what they had been talking about so often when I was home for the weekend. I remember when this place was an Asian Grocery before it grew up and took over the much larger location next door. Damn, that was a good twenty years ago! While the restaurant is named "South China" they actually specialize in both Chinese and Vietnamese food. My dad ordered the sweet and sour shrimp, and since they had it on their menu, I tried out the Bun. Bun is a Vietnamese dish that has grilled meat or eggrolls served over a bed of rice vermicelli and vegetables. The order took a bit longer to come out compared to my dad's dish, but it was actually pretty decent, and on par with the Bun dishes that i have had here in San Jose. The only weird part was the vegetables that came with the dish. There was a mint that mysteriously tasted a little medicinal or soapy; I couldn't quite pinpoint it. I understand why my parents liked the place. It was actually pretty decent food and at reasonable price. Another good indicator that business was actually pretty busy a good sign considering that it was a Monday.

My husband and I have been going here for years - best Pho around! However, recently we inquired about MSG and it turns out it's in everything!! They said they could make some of the items with no MSG but as we started ordering nothing we normally would order could they make without MSG - any soups, fried rice, even the egg rolls. The food is good, but we won't be going back until they get rid of the MSG.

You know, I've been here several times and I've really tried to like it, but I think I'm going to give up. The first time I went here was a couple of years ago for lunch with a friend of mine. We both had some of the Chinese food and both agreed that while it wasn't awful, it was definitely bland. Since then, I've gone in there a couple of times for their pho. Each time I go in thinking "how bad could it be?" and then it comes out and I remember how subpar it is. I mean, it's certainly edible, but the noodles are too thick, they're a little skimpy with the meat, and the broth is too dark and tastes weird, especially when it gets to be a little less than piping hot. A little chili sauce masks the aftertaste that it has, but at a place with good pho, I wouldn't have to add it. So I feel bad writing a review like this, because they really do try here and the service is good and the prices are fair, but I have to say it: the food's just not that impressive. There are much better options in SLC for what they do here.

Great Pho. Try it you'll like it. I think it's one of the the best in Salt Lake City.

We both had pho. I asked for mine without MSG which they said they could do. But when it came it was just some kind of chicken broth. And VERY bland. The other regular pho ordered was also extremely bland and boring. No depth to the broth at all. The meat was a strange texture and I really couldn't say for sure if it was beef or not. Maybe they cook other dishes well but pho? No.

The hostest is super nice. She makes great suggestion. The Pho is a must order. Best Pho in Utah.

  • Jai W.

cheap and cheerful. Pho is best later in the afternoon, when the broth has more flavor. I sometimes get there too early, and the broth is lacking... Service can be great too, depending on who you get... but at these prices, you can't really go wrong.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
